Principal Electrical Engineering & Hardware Designer

Principal Electrical Engineering / Hardware Architect

Location Somerville, MA (Davis Square)

About Micro-Leads. Micro-Leads is an early-stage medical device company developing a
neurostimulation therapy for treating chronic pain and other neurological diseases. Micro-Leadshas a transformative delivery technology and is embarking on clinical trials of the new device.

Dynamic Role. Expanding Team.

Summary: The Principal Electrical Engineering circuit designer will serve as the lead
electronics lead designer and architect for a Class III implantable neurostimulator and external
accessories. Candidates should be able to perform independent circuit design for mixed signal,
wireless devices, but also be able to identify technical directions, decision making, and
execution. Candidates should have extensive circuit design, characterization, and debug
experience for implantable device products (e.g., pacemakers, neurostimulators, defibrillators).

Responsibilities for the Principal Electrical Engineer
• Lead the system architecture design including implantable pulse generator, external
wireless re-charger, and clinical programmer electronics
• Design and develop specifications and essential performance for the electronic system
• Design and testing of nerve stimulator PCBs with wireless re-charging including neural
sensing capabilities
• Ability to manage design controls, develop and define requirements, & testing protocols
• Have extensive knowledge of implantable nerve stimulation, electrode impedance, offset
control, and charge balance
• Have experience overseeing the development of new ICs for neural stimulation and
sensing including developing essential performance and test protocols.
• Possess knowledge of sensing and stimulation circuitry
• Ability to contribute technically while managing the tasks and providing direction for a
small team
• Extensive experience with Altium or other schematic capture and layout tools
• Perform single-point-of-failure analyses to identify product failure points
• Testing of system components in pre-clinical studies at a collaborator or contract research
organization
• Develop medical-grade component qualifications and bill of materials
• Develop external charger and implanted pulse generator battery re-charger circuit
• Knowledge of electrical engineering disciplines such as analog and digital circuit design,
microprocessors, firmware development, digital signal processing, and RF telemetry
• Experience with micro-controllers and firmware architecture according to IEC62304
• Experience with 2.4 GHz wireless including Bluetooth Low-Energy
• Familiar with RF circuitry and wireless telemetry including matching networks, antenna
design, and impedance matching
• Strong understanding of tissue electrode impedance, tissue electrical volume spreading
properties, and electrical stimulation circuits

Requirements for the Principal Electrical Engineer
• 8-12 years of work experience in active implantable devices including neurostimulators,
pacemakers, or defibrillators
• Master’s degree in electrical engineering (or BS with equivalent experience)
• Excellent oral communication and ability to interact with sponsors and third-parties
• Ideal candidates would have knowledge of ISO 14708, Design Controls and ISO 13485
requirements as they pertain to this position
• Extensive experience with analog and digital board design
• Ability to work within a fast-paced start-up environment
• Ability to develop medical-grade analog circuit boards and embedded firmware
